I have a Lhasa that I have been grooming at home for about a year now. As I am becoming more comfortable, I have begun to purchase better equipment. Now I am at the point where I would like to start purchasing proper shears. Like most things that can cut (I am also a devoted home cook), I understand you get what you pay for in quality, sharpness, comfort, "heft", etc. but I have a few questions regarding shears:
First, which types of shears would be best to buy now and which can I wait on? I use a small clipper to do the hair on my dogs pads and between his toes. My dog is extremely well behaved when being groomed, even around his eyes/nose (if you let him smell the tool you're using first), so would I get any real benefit from purchasing ball point shears at some point? What length of shears would be most beneficial for grooming a Lhasa? What sort of metals or finishes make for high quality shears?
Second, are shears anything like knives- its better to purchase them on their own rather than in a set? I see "value" sets on Pet Edge for blending and straight shears, would I get actual use out of two pairs of straight shears (different lengths)? Would this be a waste of money *for me*?
Finally, I am looking for a reliable brand of shears that are very sharp but not like "I just cut off my finger looking at them" sharp in the price range of $40-70 (or a set $80-120). I groom my dog once every 3-8 weeks depending on the weather and what activities we're doing and I wouldn't want to have to have them sent out for sharpening more than once a year or every other year. I DO bathe my dog every single time before I do any work on him in case it matters. Is this a reasonable price for what I am looking for? I don't need specific "makes", just brands that carry reliable products within that range if they are available.
Thank you so much.
I forgot to add, I notice some brands list a hardness rating… is this important at all? What is a good rating for shears?
Lady, I already own a 2 speed Andis clipper (with snap ons) that I LOVE. Now I’m trying to find good shears (scissors), any suggestions?

How does a nose hair trimmer work? Does it just ‘trim’ the hair as the name implies, or does it pull it all out? I have heard that some of them are very painful which doesn’t make sense to me if all they do is trim the hair. Are any of them painless? They just don’t look fun to me. Just curious and seeing if anyone can answer, thanks
I am a 21 year old African American man.
When I was 20 years old before I got my first Drivers License picture for my first time of geting a license here in Michigan I had a long afro.
my mom told me I needed to get a haircut for my drivers license picture, and she convinced me to have all my long hair cut off, and she took me to the barbershop and I did get it all cut off. My mom has always convinced me that I dont look good with my hair in a long afro to take pictures, like a drivers license picture.
Back in the fall of 2008 last year I decided to go on a hair joyrney back to a long afro with my natural hair, cuz I read some stuff online about self hate and stuff and I decided to stop shaving my hair off and cutting it bald with clippers and start growing it out again, to try to represent natural African hair.
My mom doesnt seem to feel good about me going back to my natural hair joyrney to long hair with a long afro style, cuz she told me one day that when my hair is short it dont look nappy. My mom said “when your hair is short like that it dont look nappy, but when your hair was long and hard to comb it looked nappy”.
Now I am trying to grow my hair out again into a long style aka a afro and my mom telling me to keep wearing it short. I bought doo gro to try to grow my hair out faster and everything, and I just found out my mom think i dont look good with my natural hair long.
Im an adult now so i dont have to please mom and I will always tell myself that, but when my mom say negative things about black peoples hair which is my hair and her hair i will let it go in one ear out the other, cuz i aint cutting my hair off at home or the barber shop just because my mom dont like it, and say i dont look good with my hair. Beauty is what you see yourself as not what other people see, if you believe your hair looks good or your skin complexion looks good it doesnt matter what other people say or think about your body features like your hair or nose etc.
I am looking to get my boyfriend a nosehair trimmer (NT) for x-mass. Right now he sticks a nail clipper up there! I dont know anything about NTs since i’m a girl and my dad cant help since he (get THIS) PLUCKS his nosehairs! SO i’m looking for a recommendation of a specific model that works well-and if its at a good price, even better! I need one that works well on the nose…ear hair isnt a problem for him. Thanks so much!
